Sociology Optional PYQs 2013–2025: Topic-wise Trends and What Repeats

You download ten years of Sociology papers and go through them one by one. By the end you know the papers a little better, but you still don't know what to prioritise. Is Mead really that important, or did he just show up in the one paper you happened to read? Is urbanisation a regular theme or a one-time visit?

Reading year by year cannot answer this, because every paper looks new on its own. The pattern appears only when you put the same syllabus area side by side across several years and see how it was asked each time.

One thing needs to be clear before we begin. A topic coming back is not the same as a question coming back. UPSC rarely repeats a question word for word. What returns is the area: the same thinker, concept or social issue, approached from a different side. This article maps the 2013–2025 Paper 1 and Paper 2 questions to the syllabus with that in mind. Years are given wherever a question is mentioned, so you can open the paper and check it yourself.

What 13 Years of Sociology Optional PYQs Can Tell You

First, what they cannot tell you: what will come next. A topic that appeared in six of thirteen years is not guaranteed in the seventh. The papers only show where UPSC keeps looking.

Even so, four things are clear when you read the papers together.

The syllabus is covered widely. Almost every unit in both papers has been touched at some point between 2013 and 2025, so skipping a unit because "it hasn't come recently" is a gamble.

Some areas keep returning in different forms, such as social mobility, Mead's idea of self, civil society and democracy, the Indian middle class, and Dalit movements.

The wording has also moved. Early Paper 2 papers often say "write short notes with a sociological perspective", as in Green Revolution (2013), sex ratio (2013) and Ghurye's Indological approach (2014). Recent papers prefer a current context: social movements in the digital era (Paper 1, 2025), the gig economy (Paper 1, 2024), NEP 2020 (Paper 2, in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2025) and queer kinship (Paper 1, 2025).

Finally, theory and application sit together. Merton's deviance was used for urban traffic problems and his latent functions for corruption in India (both 2014). Parsons' functional prerequisites were applied to a university (2016). Durkheim's suicide theory was applied to Indian suicide rates (2018).

Paper 1: Which Areas Should You Track Closely?

Paper 1 is carried by thinkers, methods and concepts. The units are not equally predictable, so they are treated differently below.

Sociological Thinkers and Theory

Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Parsons, Merton and Mead make up a large share of thinker-based questions. Mead is one that many students underrate. Questions on the self, "I" and "me", or symbolic interactionism appear in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2024.

Durkheim's work on religion is asked in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2025. His study of suicide appears in 2017, 2018 and 2024, each time with a different demand: method, Indian application and social fact. Marx splits into alienation (2014, 2018, 2020, 2024) and historical materialism (2013, 2017, 2023, 2025). Weber's bureaucracy shows up in 2013, 2014 and 2021, and the Protestant Ethic in 2018 and 2024. Merton's reference group theory was asked in 2014, 2023 and 2025, and anomie in 2015, 2018 and 2022.

Comparison questions need their own preparation: Marx and Durkheim on division of labour (2013), Marx and Weber on stratification (2013, 2019, 2023), and Marx, Weber and Durkheim on religion (2025).

Research Methods and Methodology

This unit looks heavier in recent papers. In 2025, a single paper asked you to define variables (1c), explain reliability (2c), evaluate hypothesis (3c) and discuss sampling (7a), along with positivism and its critique (2a). These concepts were not new. Variables were asked in 2015 and 2017, hypothesis in 2016 and 2020, and reliability in 2022.

Positivism and non-positivism come back in 2013, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2025. Objectivity and value neutrality appear in 2014, 2016, 2020 and 2024. A student who prepares only the big debates, such as positivism versus interpretivism, can lose easy marks on a plain "what is a variable, and what are its types" question.

Stratification and Mobility

In the lists I worked from, this is the unit that returns most steadily. Social mobility in open and closed systems was asked in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024. Marx and Weber on stratification come in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2023. The functionalist view, including Davis and Moore, appears in 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2025. Gender as a dimension of stratification was asked in 2014, 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2025, and poverty with social exclusion in 2013, 2016 and 2023.

Work, Politics, Religion and Social Change

These units are asked more through themes than thinkers.

On work, the informal sector and informalisation appear in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2025. The organisation of work across slave, feudal and capitalist societies is asked in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2024.

In politics, civil society and democracy come up in 2013, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Elite theory (Pareto, Mosca, Michels) appears in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2025, and pressure groups in 2014, 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2025.

On religion, secularisation is asked in 2015, 2017, 2022 and 2024, sects and cults in 2015, 2018, 2021 and 2024, and religious revivalism in 2014, 2018 and 2021.

For social change, A.G. Frank's dependency idea was asked in 2019 and 2023, cultural lag in 2015 and 2018, and education and inequality in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2025.

Paper 2: Reading Repeated Themes in Indian Society

Paper 2 repeats through themes rather than formulas. The same issue returns tied to a new law, policy or event.

Perspectives, Village Studies and the Colonial Background

Thinker-based perspectives are asked often. G.S. Ghurye appears in 2014, 2018, 2022, 2024 and 2025, A.R. Desai in 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2023, and M.N. Srinivas in 2013, 2017, 2019 and 2022. Yogendra Singh's modernisation of Indian tradition was asked in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2021 and 2022. Village studies come in 2016, 2018 (Beteille's Tanjore study), 2019 (Dube), 2022, 2023 and 2025.

Caste, Class and the Agrarian Structure

Untouchability was asked in 2014, 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2024. Dumont appears in 2013, 2015, 2020 and 2023, and Ambedkar in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2021. The Indian middle class has been asked in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2023 and again in 2025. Agrarian class structure appears in 2013, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Kinship, Tribes and Religion

Patriarchy comes in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. North versus South Indian kinship was asked in 2015, 2017 and 2023, and family versus household in 2016, 2017 and 2020. Under tribes, definitional problems appear in 2013, 2020 and 2024, and integration versus autonomy in 2014, 2016 and 2023. Religious minorities were asked in 2014, 2018, 2019 and 2022.

Social Movements, Population and Development Issues

Dalit movements appear in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Farmers' movements were asked in 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020 and 2024. Population themes include sex ratio (2013, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2023) and ageing (2014, 2015, 2016, 2021, 2023). Development-induced displacement came in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2021 and 2023, child labour in 2013, 2017, 2020, 2023 and 2025, and the Green Revolution in 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2023.

A Topic Can Repeat Without the Question Repeating

Most students miss this, and the table already hints at it.

One Topic, Many Angles: Dalit Movements

Look at Dalit movements in Paper 2 across the years. In 2013 the question was what the movement is and what issues it raises (20). In 2014 it was the dynamics of contemporary Dalit movements (10), and in 2016 the forms of Dalit assertion (10). In 2018 forms of assertion came again, with implications for the political system (20). 2021 paired identity politics with main trends (20), 2022 asked about issues involved (20), and 2023 asked whether Dalit mobilisation strengthened democracy (20). In 2024 the focus was social and historical origins (10), and in 2025 identity formation (10).

The topic came back nine times, but no two questions asked for exactly the same thing. A single "Dalit movement" note covers the base, and you then have to turn it toward origins, forms, democracy or identity as the question needs.

When the Question Really Does Come Back

Sometimes UPSC comes very close to repeating itself. Forms of untouchability was asked in 2022 and again in 2024 with almost the same demand. In Paper 1, social mobility in closed and open systems (2020 and 2022) differs only by directive, and civil society with democracy (2013, 2021, 2023) keeps circling the same idea. A well-prepared answer earns its place in these cases.

Topic, Concept and Question Are Not the Same Thing

A recurring topic is a broad area, like Dalit movements. A repeated concept is narrower. Identity politics appeared in Paper 1 (2022) and in Paper 2 (2021 and, through identity formation, 2025). A genuinely similar question is one where topic, concept and demand all match, as with untouchability above. Only the third lets you reuse an answer almost as it is. The first two need you to think again.

What Changes in the Way UPSC Frames Questions?

The same thinker can be asked in very different ways. Marx's alienation, for instance, came as a comparison with Durkheim's anomie (2014), as a question on how people are alienated and what Marx suggests to change it (2018), as "critically assess" (2020), and as "critically explain the salient features" (2024). A student who has memorised only the types of alienation will manage 2024 and struggle with the other three.

Weber's bureaucracy shows the same shift. In 2013 the question was to examine its salient features. In 2021 it asked whether you agree that bureaucracy can become an iron cage, and to justify your answer. One asks what you know, the other asks what you think.

Application questions test whether the idea has moved beyond the textbook. Examples are Merton's concepts used for traffic problems and corruption (2014) and for identity-making in the digital world (2025).

Questions that begin with "Do you think" or "Is" cannot be answered with definitions. The 2024 question on whether objectivity is over-hyped and the 2025 questions on whether functionalism promotes the status quo or whether stratification theory is gender-blind all need a position, reasons, and some acknowledgement of the other side.

How to Make Your Own Topic-wise PYQ Sheet

You don't need an app. A notebook or spreadsheet with a few columns is enough.

Take one paper at a time. For every question, note the year, paper and question number, then tag it to a unit of the official syllabus. Write the directive. Note the thinker or concept. Then add one line on what is really being asked, whether that is a definition, a comparison, a critique or an application. The last column is for your own answer status.

Year / Paper / Q	Question	Syllabus unit	Directive	Thinker / concept	What it asks	Status
2022 / 1 / 3b	Durkheim and Merton on anomie	Thinkers	Critically examine	Anomie	Comparison plus evaluation	Notes done, not written
2023 / 2 / 3c	Sanskritisation with illustrations	Caste	Critically examine	Srinivas	Concept, critique, examples	Answer practised

After a few papers, sort the sheet by syllabus unit. Units with very few entries are not unimportant. They are the ones where you should read the syllabus more carefully instead of guessing from the sheet.

How PYQs Should Change Your Preparation

Treat PYQs as a companion to the syllabus. Finish a unit and solve its questions soon after, so you see how the unit is actually asked. If your base is still weak, a structured programme such as the Sociology Optional course at L2A Academy can help you cover the syllabus in order before you lean heavily on the question papers.

For thinkers, keep three handles ready: the core idea, one criticism, and one Indian or contemporary application. The 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2025 examples above show why the application handle matters.

Build a small stock of flexible examples. Platform work, migration, digital media and NEP 2020 can serve several questions across work, movements, education and inequality, so one example does not have to be learned separately for each unit.

Practise directives, not just topics. Pick one concept and write it three ways, for instance as an explanation, a critique and an application. Then write under time limits, with 10-markers at about 150 words and 20-markers at about 250 words. The Sociology Mains Test Series is useful at this stage because answers get evaluated.

Mistakes Students Make While Analysing Previous Year Questions

Preparing only the "repeated" topics. Digital ethnography came in 2024 (Paper 1) and does not show up earlier in the lists I used. Someone who prepared only established methods topics would have had nothing ready.

Memorising model answers. The Marx and Weber examples show why this fails. The topic stays and the demand changes.

Counting topics without reading the demand. Knowing that Durkheim came three times means little unless you notice that the three questions asked for different things.

Treating the two papers as separate subjects. Paper 1 asked Davis' theory of stratification in relation to Indian society (2016), the changing nature of caste as a status group (2024), and Durkheim's suicide theory with Indian suicide rates (2018). Your Paper 2 knowledge helps there.

Using PYQs as the whole syllabus. Papers show how areas have been asked, not every way they can be asked.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Sociology Optional PYQs?

Sociology Optional PYQs are the questions asked in earlier UPSC Mains Sociology papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. Each paper carries 250 marks, so the optional is worth 500 marks in total.

How should I analyse Sociology Optional PYQs from 2013 to 2025?

Map every question to the syllabus, note the year, paper and directive, and tag the thinker or concept. Write what the question really asks. Then group by unit and see how the same area was framed across years.

Which topics repeat in Sociology Optional Paper 1?

In the 2013–2025 questions, recurring areas include social mobility, Marx and Weber on stratification, Durkheim on religion and suicide, Mead's self, positivism and objectivity, civil society and democracy, secularisation and sects. They return as areas, not as identical questions.

Which themes recur in Sociology Optional Paper 2?

Recurring themes include the perspectives of Ghurye, Desai, Srinivas and Yogendra Singh, village studies, untouchability and Dumont, the middle class, patriarchy and kinship, Dalit and farmers' movements, sex ratio, ageing and displacement.

Do the same questions repeat in UPSC Sociology Optional?

Rarely. Topics repeat often, but exact questions seldom do. Forms of untouchability (2022 and 2024) is one of the closer cases.

How many years of Sociology Optional PYQs should I solve?

Go through all thirteen years for mapping. For timed answer writing, the latest five to seven years are a practical choice because they show current framing.

Should I complete the syllabus before solving PYQs?

Not necessarily the whole syllabus. Solve a unit's PYQs soon after studying it, so your reading stays tied to how UPSC asks questions.

How can PYQs improve Sociology Optional answer writing?

They show the directives, the depth expected and the amount of application. Writing different versions of the same topic trains you to answer the demand, not just recall notes.

Are PYQs enough to prepare Sociology Optional?

No. They show past framing but do not cover the whole syllabus or future angles. Use them with syllabus-based notes, current examples and regular answer practice.

How should I maintain a topic-wise Sociology PYQ notebook?

Record year, paper, question number, syllabus unit, directive, thinker or concept, what the question asks, and your answer status. Sort by unit every few papers and look for gaps.

Use PYQs to Prepare Better, Not to Predict the Paper

Previous year questions are most useful when they show you what UPSC expects and give you something to practise on. They are not a forecast. If you want guided syllabus coverage and regular answer evaluation, you can explore the Sociology Optional course and the Sociology Mains Test Series at L2A Academy.
