How to Check the UPSC Mains Result 2026
- Go to upsc.gov.in and open "What's New" or "Examination – Written Results".
- Click "Written Result: Civil Services (Main) Examination, 2026".
- Open the name-wise or roll number-wise PDF.
- Press Ctrl+F (or "Find in page" on mobile) and search your 7-digit roll number. Searching by roll number is safer than by name, because many names repeat.
- Save a copy of the PDF for your records.
Note: the serial number in the PDF is not a rank. The list is sorted by roll number. UPSC does not publish Mains marks or ranks at this stage. Marks for every candidate come only after the final result.
What "Provisional" Candidature Means
The notice says the candidature of all 2,526 candidates is provisional. Clearing Mains does not lock in your place. UPSC can still cancel candidature if:
- you do not submit the online application update between 11 and 25 November 2026 (no e-summon letter will be issued);
- you marked your qualification as "appearing" at the Prelims stage and do not upload proof of passing the qualifying exam;
- your age, education, category, EWS or PwBD documents cannot be verified with originals at the interview;
- a reservation certificate was issued after 27 February 2026.
Treat the next three weeks as part of the exam.
DAF-II Checklist: What to Keep Ready Before 11 November
The form opens on 11 November. Collect everything now so that you are filling it, not hunting for documents. Based on the fields listed in the UPSC notice:
Details you will update
- Correspondence and permanent postal address
- Higher educational qualifications
- Achievements in different fields (sports, NCC, publications, awards)
- Employment details and service experience
- Service allocated in an earlier CSE, if any
- Marital status and parental details
- Earlier exam details, attempt information and debarment information
- PwBD recommendation details from the past, if applicable
- OBC / EWS annexure, where applicable
- Socio-economic questionnaire
- Service preference and home cadre
- Consent for disclosure of details on the Pratibha Setu portal
Documents to scan and keep originals of
- Proof of age (Class 10 certificate)
- Degree certificate or provisional certificate and marksheets
- Community (SC/ST/OBC) or EWS certificate in the prescribed format, issued on or before 27 February 2026
- PwBD certificate, if applicable
- Ex-servicemen documents, if claiming relaxation
- Proof of any achievement you list
- TA form and other documents asked for in the e-summon letter
Three DAF mistakes to avoid
- Not pressing final submit. Even if you have nothing new to add, the notice says you must log in, verify and finally submit. Without this, no e-summon letter will be issued.
- Rushing service preferences. Your service and cadre order affects your career for decades and cannot be changed later. Decide it calmly, with family, before the window opens.
- Writing hobbies you cannot defend. Every line of your DAF can become a question. Write only what you can talk about for five minutes.
After you submit, you should receive a unique reference number by email and SMS. Keep it.
UPSC Mains Result 2026 vs Previous Years
How competitive was this year? Here are the Prelims-qualified and interview-call numbers from the last five UPSC cycles.
| CSE year | Qualified Prelims (eligible for Mains) | Qualified for interview | Interview calls as % of Mains pool |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 13,343 | 2,526 | 18.9% |
| 2025 | 14,161 | 2,736 | 19.3% |
| 2024 | 14,627 | 2,845 | 19.5% |
| 2023 | 14,624 | 2,916 | 19.9% |
| 2022 | 13,090 | 2,529 | 19.3% |
Source: UPSC Prelims and Mains result notices for each year. The percentage uses the number who qualified Prelims; the number who actually wrote Mains is a little lower.
What this tells you:
- 2,526 is the smallest interview list in five years. It follows the smaller Prelims list of 13,343.
- The ratio barely moves. Year after year, roughly 1 in 5 Mains candidates reaches the interview. The bar is steady, and it is set by how your answers compare with everyone else's.
- Roughly 4 in 5 Mains candidates did not make it this year, about 10,800 of the 13,343 who qualified Prelims. If you are one of them, you are in the majority, and the next section is for you.
If You Qualified: How to Prepare for the 275-Mark Interview
The Personality Test carries 275 marks and has no minimum qualifying marks. Interview scores often differ by 50 marks or more between candidates, enough to move a final rank by hundreds of places. That makes the next few weeks some of the most valuable of the whole exam.
UPSC has not announced the schedule yet. In recent cycles, interviews have begun within about one to two months of the written result and continued into the spring. The final result has come out between March and May of the following year.
A simple plan for the next four weeks
- Week 1 (now – 15 Nov): Finish the DAF-II carefully. Make a "DAF question bank" by writing 10 questions on every line: name, hometown, district, state, college, subject, job, hobbies.
- Week 2: Current affairs from the last 12 months. Read one newspaper editorial page daily and form a balanced view on each big issue.
- Week 3: Your graduation subject and your optional subject. Board members often test whether you really understand the subject you chose.
- Week 4 onwards: Take two or three mock interviews with different panels, not ten. Too many mocks can make your answers rehearsed.
Optional subject questions: practice prompts for Anthropology and Sociology
Because the optional is part of your DAF, it often comes up. These are practice prompts written by our team, not questions UPSC has asked:
Anthropology optional
- You studied tribal societies. Is the Forest Rights Act, 2006 working on the ground?
- Isolation, assimilation or integration: which approach should guide tribal policy today, and why?
- As a district officer, how would you use an anthropologist's methods to understand a community before a development project?
- What do recent developments around Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) tell us about the limits of welfare schemes?
Sociology optional
- Is caste weakening in urban India or only changing its form?
- Weber described the ideal bureaucracy. Which of its features helps an IAS officer, and which gets in the way?
- How has social media changed social movements in India?
- Your district has rising migration to cities. What happens to the families left behind?
Answer each in under two minutes. Give a view, give one example, and acknowledge the other side.
If Your Name Is Not on the List: Your CSE 2027 Plan
This is hard news, especially after a year of work. But you now have something most first-time aspirants don't: you have cleared Prelims and written a full Mains. The question is where to put your energy for CSE 2027.
The CSE 2027 calendar
| Event | Date (UPSC calendar 2027) | Time from 6 Nov 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| CSE 2027 notification | 13 January 2027 | ~2 months |
| Last date to apply | 2 February 2027 | ~3 months |
| Prelims 2027 | 23 May 2027 | 198 days |
| Mains 2027 begins | 20 August 2027 | 287 days |
Check the official notification for any changes. Before you apply, confirm your remaining attempts and age eligibility.
Five things to do in the next 30 days
- Don't wait for your marks. Mains marks are released only after the final result, around spring 2027, which is too late to plan around. Diagnose yourself now: which papers felt rushed, which answers were thin, and where you left questions unattempted.
- Protect Prelims. Mains candidates who don't clear the next Prelims lose the whole year. Restart MCQ practice and CSAT now, not in March.
- Fix your optional first. The optional is 500 of the 1,750 Mains marks, more than 28% of your written total. It has a fixed syllabus and repeating themes, so it is the part of Mains you control most. A gain of 30 to 40 marks in the optional can be the difference between missing and making the interview list.
- Write with feedback, not alone. Ten evaluated answers with specific feedback teach more than fifty unchecked ones. Read how we break down evaluation in how a Sociology answer copy is evaluated.
- Keep GS answer writing alive with a daily habit, even one answer a day, so you don't restart from zero in June.
CSE 2027 Optional Test Series: new batches from 7 November
L2A's Anthropology Test Series (under Bala Sir) and Sociology Test Series (faculty-only evaluation led by Dr. Neha Tiwari) for UPSC Mains 2027 start this week. Sectional and full-length tests, detailed feedback on every copy, and model answers.
Which L2A Programme Fits Where You Are?
| Your situation | Best fit | Batch starts |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropology optional, syllabus done, want full test practice | Anthropology Test Series 2027: 4+2, 6+2, 8+2, 10+4 or 16+2 plans | 7 November 2026 |
| Sociology optional, want evaluated tests | Sociology Test Series 2027: 4+2 to 16+2 plans, faculty-only evaluation | 7 – 9 November 2026 |
| Want to fix answers on real UPSC questions first | PYQ Evaluation Programme (1-month or 5-month), Anthropology and Sociology | 9 November 2026 |
| Need a daily writing habit | Daily Answer Writing Programme (DAWP) | 9 November 2026 |
| Rethinking your optional | Anthropology Foundation or Sociology Foundation CSE 2027 | 9 November 2026 |
| Securing Prelims 2027 first | Prelims Test Series 2027 and CSAT Test Series | See batch page |
In the "4+2" style names, the first number is sectional tests and the second is full-length tests. For example, 10+4 means 10 sectional tests and 4 full-length Paper I and Paper II tests.
